Policy Committees - Women

FECCA believes that:

• all discrimination against women needs to be eliminated, whether it is on the grounds of gender, religion, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity or age;

• women have the right to freedom from violence and oppressive acts, including domestic and family violence, detention that compounds pre-existing trauma, detention without fair trial or justifiable reasons and traditional practices detrimental to the health and well being of women and girls; and

• women have the right to access services, information and opportunities that will optimise quality of life.

• FECCA also acknowledges that women have a responsibility to seek to build a society that nurtures these rights.

The FECCA Women’s Steering Committee was formed in October 2003. Its brief includes:

• further development and refinement of the FECCA Women’s policy,

• promoting issues of concern to women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds (CLDB), lobbying for positive change,

• establishing strong working partnerships with organisations with a similar focus on women from CLDB,

• providing comment on the policies and programs of other organisations, particularly those of government, when invited to do so,

• contributing to submissions with a focus on women of CLDB, and

• broad community consultation about women’s issues in the context of a multicultural Australia.
